Conscious Sedation
Did you know that in the United States that somewhere between 6% and 14% of the population voluntarily avoid seeking dental care because of their fear of dentistry? These individuals delay treatment until they are in such discomfort that home remedies are no longer effective. They are considered to be severely anxious patients and present a unique dilemma for the dentist and the dental team. Attempts at treating these patients without addressing their fears cause increased stress for both the doctor and the patient. What are the causes of patient fear of dentistry? Most people harbor fear of pain; fear of the unknown; or fear of helplessness and dependency. Ignoring the presence of dental fears provokes many negative responses from the patient. One of the most common is the response of the pain reaction to increased anxiety. Pain and anxiety are related—pain is a source of anxiety, anxiety may increase pain, and increased pain incites further anxiety. Our mission, as dental care providers, is to help our patients alleviate both of these responses. Here at AlwaysGreatSmiles, we offer both inhalation sedation (Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen) and oral conscious premedication. Both techniques are reliable and safe, and allow us to provide a more pleasant dental experience for our patients. Let’s face it, having dental work done is not at the top of the list of all-time enjoyable things to do; it may not even be in the top 4000—BUT when it has to be done; or should be done for proper dental maintence, isn’t it comforting to know that AlwaysGreatSmiles is there for you.
